Brick & Mortar Requirement Formula

Transparent mathematical methodology explained in plain English.

Total Bricks = Wall Area (sq ft) × Bricks per Sq Ft (6.85 Modular / 6.55 Standard) × (1 + Waste %) | Mortar Bags (80 lb) = Bricks / 32

Calculates brick units factoring in standard 3/8-inch mortar joints and pre-mixed Type N/S mortar bag coverage (approx 30–35 bricks per 80 lb bag).

Variables Explained:

  • Wall Length (ft): Length of brick wall.
  • Wall Height (ft): Height of brick wall.
  • Brick Size: Modular (6.85/sq ft), Standard (6.55/sq ft), Queen (5.75/sq ft), or King (4.75/sq ft).
Real Project Example

25 ft Long by 6 ft High Brick Garden Wall (Modular Size, 10% Waste)

Calculating total bricks and mortar bags.

Sample Project Inputs:
Length:25 ft
Height:6 ft
Type:Modular (6.85/sq ft)
Waste:10%
Step-by-Step Calculation:
  1. Wall Surface Area: 25 × 6 = 150 sq ft.
  2. Raw Brick Count: 150 × 6.85 = 1,027.5 bricks.
  3. Total with 10% Waste: 1,027.5 × 1.10 = 1,131 Bricks.
  4. Mortar Bags (80 lb): 1,131 / 32 = 36 Bags of pre-mix mortar.
  5. Masonry Sand (if mixing on site): ~0.90 Cubic Yards.
Calculated Answer:1,131 Modular Bricks and 36 Bags (80 lb) of Mortar.

What is the difference between standard and modular bricks?

Modular bricks measure 3-5/8" × 2-1/4" × 7-5/8" and are designed to lay on a 4-inch modular grid with a 3/8" mortar joint (6.85 bricks/sq ft). Standard bricks measure 3-5/8" × 2-1/4" × 8" (6.55 bricks/sq ft).

What type of mortar is best for exterior brick walls?

Type N mortar (medium strength ~750 PSI) is the industry standard for exterior brick veneer and non-structural residential masonry above grade.
